Heather Brickman and Steve Richart to Discuss Email Retention at 2022 SecurED Schools: K12 Data Privacy and Cybersecurity Conference

Partners Heather Brickman and Steve Richart will present “How Long Do I Need to Keep This *&%* Email? And Other Questions of the Universe” for Illinois educators at the 2022 SecurED Schools: K12 Data Privacy and Cybersecurity Conference.  

The event will be held on virtually on Thursday, January 20, 2022.   

This session will break down the biggest digital record dilemmas for schools, including conversion and storage methods, retention timelines, and destruction protocols. Heather and Steve will review key legal obligations for handling student, personnel, and business records, with practical tips to support compliance in maintaining and accessing digital records under records confidentiality and retention laws and production under FOIA and subpoenas.

Steve is an experienced school law attorney, concentrating his practice in the areas of board governance, FOIA, OMA, elections, school finance, and property taxes. He also represents school districts in judicial and administrative proceedings. 

Heather Brickman is the chair of the firm’s Corporate/Board Governance Practice Group, and concentrates her practice in governance issues, including policies and transparency compliance, as well as corporate matters from finance and transactions to employee benefit plans.
