On August 31, 2017, the Illinois legislature passed a comprehensive school funding reform bill. Part of the school funding reform bill modified the physical education requirements for schools. Instead of a daily physical education requirement, schools are now only required to provide physical education a minimum of three days in a five day week. Additionally, the school funding reform bill granted school districts the discretion to excuse students in grades 7 through 12 who participate in interscholastic or extracurricular athletics from the physical education requirement on a case-by-case basis.
